PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Eleanor Roosevelt, our sister Junior Leaguer, once said, “The giving of love is an education in itself.”  We all know that love takes many forms: love of spouse, love of family and love of community are but a few.  Every day, I see Junior League of McAllen members showing love in the form of volunteerism within the community in various ways both big and small - from helping our children learn to read one book at a time at Children’s Arts & Literacy Festival to promoting the arts and sciences by establishing the McAllen International Museum which is now known as the International Museum of Art and Science.

It is amazing the work that gets done when we unite in our love of giving back to this community; in uniting our hearts and minds for a greater goal.  We have done so much.  Now we need to do a better job of letting others know, because our job must include promoting growth.  We need to let other women know that we are the place where they can make a significant impact.

Are we known for our parties or as leaders in the development of women?  Are we to be praised for our cookbooks or as advocates in the fight to stop bullying?  Certainly without fundraisers and cookbooks we would not be able to do our mission work.  But do we know who we are?  Do we fully appreciate the impact we make on our community?

Times have changed, and we have, as women, the ability to have a huge impact on those around us.  Much has changed in the lives of women over the past 72 years.  Many of our grandmothers did not have careers outside their homes.  Now most of us do, and this fact magnifies the sacrifice of our time, but it also empowers us to achieve great things as never before.

To get the job done, as they say, I am asking each member for something precious: your time.  In return I promise you personal fulfillment and growth and the opportunity to make our community a better place.  Be a proud and willing advocate for our goals and our mission.  Commit to promote the community good.  Excite other women to show the same purpose and commitment.  Let us build on the past and secure the future.

Denise Garcia
