SCHOLARSHIPS & GRANTS

In 1976, the Junior League of McAllen established a College Scholarship program with the proceeds from its first cookbook, "La Piñata".
This scholarship program has grown over the years from $2,000 to $30,000 in monies awarded to deserving college-bound students from the McAllen High Schools.  Beginning in 2004, students volunteering within the Teen Court program were eligible for an additional college scholarship from the Junior League of McAllen.  $1,000 is divided each year among select graduating students who have given their time and talents to serve as attorneys, court clerks, bailiffs and jurors in Teen Court.

Since 1972, Girls' State delegates have also benefited from monies distributed by the Junior League of McAllen.  Three girls are sponsored each year for Texas Bluebonnet Girls State.  Beginning in 2005, Girl Scout Camperships were available for girls in the Girl Scouts of Greater South Texas Council's Outreach Program.  Camperships will be provided each year for these girls to spend a week of resident camp at the new Girl Scout Camp in Bayview, Texas.
     Beginning in 2004,
the Junior League of McAllen began administering an annual  Educational Enhancement Fund of $10,000.  This Educational Enhancement Fund is designed to support a wide variety of educational experiences for local children.  It is the intention of this fund to challenge and encourage youth to develop themselves to their full potential and find the scholar within.  In 1995, the ABC Grant program was developed to distribute funds to teachers within McAllen ISD and at McAllen Private Schools.  This program has already grown from $1,000 to $6,000 in monies awarded and encourages innovative educational projects.
In addition to these gifts, the Junior League of McAllen also distributes annually  a Community Assistance Fund of $20,000.  The Community Assistance Fund is designed to respond to the immediate needs of local non-profit agencies.  Primary consideration for these funds is given to eligible agencies facing an emergency situation such as the disruption of services.

TEEN COURT COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP

$1,000 in total college scholarship monies is divided each year among select graduating seniors who volunteer their time as attorneys, court clerks, bailiffs and jurors for the McAllen Police Department's Teen Court.  Teen Court is a legally binding alternative system of justice that offers young first-time offenders an opportunity to make restitution for their offenses through community service, educational classes, and jury service.  Teen Court is a "hands on" educational opportunity that allows both offenders and teen volunteers to better understand our system of justice.

Call Diana Ramos at the McAllen Police Department for more information about this scholarship opportunity: 972-7920.

GIRLS STATE SCHOLARSHIP

$1,500 sends three girls each year to Texas Bluebonnet Girls State - a mythical state where participants organize their own government.
The program concludes with a visit to the State Capitol building in Austin where the girls are given an opportunity to meet state officials.  The purpose of Girls State is to educate young women in the duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of American citizenship.

For more information, contact the counselors office at each high school: McAllen, Memorial & Nikki Rowe.

GIRL SCOUT CAMPERSHIP

Girl Scout Camperships for Camp Bayview are available for girls in the Girl Scouts of Greater South Texas' Outreach Program.  While traditional troops raise money for camp through cookie sales, low income girls in the outreach program do not sell cookies and have very limited or no funds to pay for camp.  These camperships are provided each year as an important community investment; the Girl Scout mission is to “inspire girls with the highest ideals of character, conduct, patriotism and service”.

Contact the Girls Scouts of Greater South Texas at (956) 425-2388 for more information.
