READING, ART, MUSIC & CREATIVITY:
THE JUNIOR LEAGUE OF McALLEN LEGACY

bullet

From 1947 to 1952, the Junior League of McAllen sponsored various radio shows aimed at instilling the joy of reading in youngsters: "The Children's Hour", "Books Bring Adventure", "Storytime" and "The League Story Lady".  In addition, from 1950 through 1974, a Story Hour was held at the McAllen Library.  The Junior League of McAllen continued this tradition in recent years by sponsoring a professional puppeteer emphasizing reading readiness to delight 2000 local school children & a storytelling artist to entrance over 1500 local school children.

From 1954 to 1960, art classes, art exhibits and art appreciation lectures were conducted at local schools.  The Junior League of McAllen held a summer drama workshop in 1962.

In 1960, the Junior League of McAllen became involved in the International Music Festival and sponsored a Pops Concert for next 20 years.  Following this tradition, Symphony in the Park, a free public concert featuring first the Valley Symphony Orchestra and later the McAllen Town Band, began in 1993 and was held for the next 10 years.

The Junior League of McAllen has presented Kaleidoscope (a mobile creativity exhibit by Hallmark) to the community 3 times.  The most recent Kaleidoscope, in 2001, touched the lives of over 18,000 children.
